Meet the XL Planning Team
Following his time serving in the Royal Navy, Glenn is now a professional planner with over 20 years of experience in both private practice and local authority. Glenn holds a BA Hons Degree in Town and Country Planning and a Masters Degree in Spatial Planning. His strengths are mediation and negotiation, as well as having an in depth understanding of the planning and enforcement system through his time as a Planning Enforcement Officer. These roles combined help to achieve the best solution that works for the client as well as the local authority. In his spare time Glenn can be found on the rugby pitch – too old to play, he now enjoys coaching and refereeing.

Tracey Capell
Tracey joined the Team in December 2020 after leaving a career in HR and Training and Development. Tracey works as an Office Administrator alongside Simone dealing with all administration tasks from initial telephone enquiries through to decisions on your planning application. We regularly monitor the progress of any applications to enable potential issues to be dealt with promptly and to update our clients throughout their planning journey. Tracey has a wealth of experience in HR, Leadership, Training and Development which assists the smooth running of the office. In her spare time, Tracey enjoys travelling across the South West and the UK in her VW Campervan and going to Center Parcs.

John Clarke
John has a wealth of knowledge from working for 20 years as a Planning Enforcement Officer across various Local Planning Authorities. We are very pleased that John joined our team in 2017 to bring his knowledge and skills to further enhance the experience that we can offer our clients, now having over 25 years of experience. John is an avid supporter and season ticket holder of Bristol City Football Club.

Dan Courtney
Dan began working with XL Planning in 2019 following 5 years, first as a Part 2 Architectural assistant, then as an Architect at Purcell. Dan has a wide range of expertise across a variety of sectors including residential, cultural and places of worship. He has a keen interest in new design in historic context and has worked on a large number of projects involving listed buildings and landscapes. A key project he was involved in while at Purcell was the replacement of the toll houses at the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the scheme also involved the restoration of the remaining original toll booths. Dan has also spent time working at Hopkins Architects and Leslie Jones Architects in London, and Caroe and Partners in Wells.
Dan is a keen cyclist and enjoys the feeling of flying down hills, not so much the pain of climbing back up again. He spends as much time outside as possible and is a qualified bushcraft and wilderness living instructor.
Simone joined the administration team in 2021 and works alongside Tracey. With a background of Rural Estate Management, Events Management and Office Administration, Simone is a highly organised, and is now using her wealth of experience to deal with all aspects of applications that are bought to us, starting with your initial enquiry right though to when a decision has been issued, ensuring all clients and colleagues have been updated along the way. In her spare time Simone looks after her young son and her cat, Nigella Lawson.

Lucy Hodgson
Lucy joined the team in 2020 having worked in Planning for 18 years with 16 years at Mid Devon District Council with 12 years as an Area Team Leader. Lucy is a Chartered Town Planner and holds an undergraduate degree in Geographical Science and a Master’s degree in Town and Country Planning. Lucy has an extensive knowledge of the Planning system and a wealth of experience in dealing with all types of planning applications and appeals from smaller householder applications to large scale residential and industrial developments. Lucy enjoys bringing her planning experience and in depth knowledge of the planning system together with the aspirations of clients to find a development solution that achieves the aims of both our clients and the Local Planning Authority. Lucy is a very keen runner and rower and spends as much time as possible outside with her family either running, paddle boarding, sea swimming, cycling or walking.

Naomi Jackson
Naomi joined the team as a graduate planner in 2018. Naomi holds a BA Hons Degree in Geography, Masters Degree in Planning and is also a Chartered RTPI Planner. Naomi has an extensive knowledge of the planning system and a proven track record in delivering planning approvals and appeals.

Gabrielle Wilde
Gabby joined the team in 2022, having previously worked on large infrastructure projects for WSP for three years as a Graduate Planner and worked up to a Planning Consultant. Gabby has an MSc in Planning and a BA (Hons) in Geography from The University of Plymouth and is working towards qualifying as a Chartered Town Planner. Gabby cares about balancing the needs of the clients and the Local Planning Authority to create successful outcomes. Gabby enjoys many sports outside of work, including netball, rounders and tennis.
Alison joined the team in 2019. Alison specialises in dealing with building regulations drawings and applications, as well as planning drawings. Alison holds a Diploma in Surveying from Reading University.

Ian Darling
Since 2016, XL Planning Ltd. have been pleased to partner with Ian who has his own design company – Ian Darling Design. Ian has worked in the construction industry for over 20 years. Initially Ian worked his way up as a construction project manager until 2006 when he formed his own design company, graduating the same year. Ian holds two degrees – a BA Degree in Environmental Building Design and Town and Country Planning as well as a Bachelor of Engineering Degree. He has a Postgraduate Certificate in Technology Management, combining project management and building design. He holds certificates and diplomas in CDM 2015 compliance, COSHH, Fire Safety, Legionella Awareness, Safeguarding and Health and Safety. In his spare time, Ian enjoys eating cheese and drinking real ale.

Myles Broom
Myles is an aspiring future architect. As a recent part one architectural graduate with a Batchelors of science in architecture from UWE.
He is currently working to completing his part one practical experience at XL to start a master’s Level apprenticeship with XL in his journey to becoming an ARB certified architect.
Previously working before joining XL upon the completion of his degree, he enjoys climbing including bouldering at the hanger in Exeter.

Philly Matthew
Philly joined XL Planning in December 2023 as assistant Planner following a year working for a national housebuilder. She is completing her level 7 Master's degree apprenticeship and is due to receive her certificate in Urban Planning in 2024 from The University of the West of England (UWE), before continuing to work towards a Master's degree in Urban Planning (graduating 2026) and starting her route to RTPI Accreditation.
Outside of work, Philly enjoys photography, ice skating and watching ice hockey in Bristol.
Alison joined the administration team in 2024, working alongside Tracey and Simone dealing with new enquiries through to planning application decisions. She has a background in facilities, project co-ordination and office management and studied in her spare time for her Master’s degree in English. Outside of work Alison enjoys reading, is a member of a book club and regularly travels back to visit family and friends in Northern Ireland.
